Network for Young Artists, Inc. (NYA) was founded by educator Terry Lowry, in 1999, to give local youth the opportunity to use music and performing arts to build self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills that are transferable to social and academic settings. Although he is not a music teacher, Lowry has a lifelong appreciation for music of all types and a keen awareness of the positive impact music education has on all aspects of learning. Unfortunately, as an educator and coach in one of San Antonio's poorest school districts, Lowry is also keenly aware that the families of the low-income, predominantly minority students he teaches frequently do not have the financial resources to provide music lessons for their children. Although a number of NYA's present and former students have become very talented musicians, the organization's focus is on preparing students for success in all areas of their lives, as opposed to preparing them for professional careers in music, dance, or performing arts.
Located in the Art Deco District in San Antonio, NYA is now in its 10th year of service to the community. NYA has grown from 30 members in its inaugural year, to over 250 members at present. Membership is open to youth 4 to 20 years of age. NYA offers vocal, dance , mariachi, guitar and percussion lessons. Members participate in a host of performances throughout the year. For a $100.00 annual enrollment fee, or $60 for 6 months, NYA members can enroll in any of the weekly classes offered. Additionally, NYA provides over 50 music performance venues per year for students to show their talents. NYA encourages members to take full advantage of all services available to them. NYA's goal is to develop its member's artistic abilities, but most importantly build self-esteem through the arts.
